Comprehensivist

Tom Cassidy

Thinking out loud — and inviting you in.

This isn't a monument to finished ideas. It's a place to think in the open: an ongoing attempt to understand a few things that seem to matter, offered in a form that talks back. You're welcome to disagree. That's rather the point.

The Format

Why this site talks back. Most of what's here — the essays, the frameworks, the books — is published as a living epistemic work: it adapts to you, every claim wears its status, the objections live inside, and a guide called Alexander helps you carry the ideas into your own life. The best way to understand the format is to use it.

Three movements

1The Future

Configuration Economics

An invitation to an infinite game.

A physics-grounded account of economic value — what enables future possibility rather than what gets consumed. But more than that, it's an open game in the sense James Carse meant: the point isn't to win it or finish it, but to keep it going and bring others in — continuing the work begun by people like Buckminster Fuller. This is what I'd like to spend the rest of my life on. Come and think about it with me.

2The Foundation

Distinction Physics

The serious thinking that earns the rest a hearing.

A treatise taking distinction as the primitive from which physics, mind and meaning are reconstructed — standing, as all such work does, on the shoulders of giants. It's the foundation Configuration Economics rests on, and it's offered in that spirit: some novelty, a lot of reframing — most of it, I hope, helpful. The honesty is the point; the credibility comes from not pretending it's more than it is.
