Architects of the Future of Humanity
Why well-intentioned change-makers fail by fighting what's wrong, and how focusing on what we want to create — individually and collectively — is the more powerful path.
I believe that we are architects of the future of humanity, which is pretty bold. But it’s what you all believe in anyway. You all want to change the world, to make a difference, to leave your footprint on the universe, to create a legacy. Of course you do, that’s why you’re here. That’s why you’re reading this.
You are architects already. You are what you think you are.
You all have different ways of how you are going to do it, but you all want the same thing: to make the world a better place for yourself, for your loved ones, for all of us. But HOW I propose we do it is where it gets interesting — for me at least, and I’m convinced that you’re going to love it too. :)
I think the only problem with well-intentioned ‘change the worlders’ has been that they’ve been using their extraordinary desire to do good for others in the wrong way.
It’s not been their fault. They just haven’t known what to do. They’ve been running around like Don Quijote, charging at windmills, in a glorious effort to FIX everything they see wrong in the world. They’ve been focusing on the injustice and the suffering in the world, and trying to redress the balance between the people who have it good, and the people who don’t.
First off, let’s be clear on this. There is nothing wrong with this approach intrinsically. It is a very noble thing to do. It’s just that it doesn’t work very well.
It requires insane levels of human resources in order to make a difference when operating in this way. It requires crazy amounts of energy, money, time, ideas and willing to make any kind of difference.
Let’s have a look at Bill Gates for a second. This guy is a man of extraordinary resources in terms of finances, willing, reach, human capital etc. Yet he’s been unable to effect change in all but a very small way, despite the massive resources he’s been investing. Why? Why do you think this is?
Because while trying to defeat the enemy, he has been summoning the entire negative creative power of humanity, to work against him. It’s not his fault. But it’s going to be very difficult to bring the world to completion while focusing your thoughts on all the things that are wrong with the world.
What do Olympic athletes do when they are preparing to achieve a vision? Do they focus on what they want, or do they focus on what they don’t want?
Exactly. They focus on what they want.
What did Bill Gates himself do when he created his company Microsoft? Did he focus on what he didn’t want, or did he focus on what he did want?
Exactly.
But what do people do when they try to act as Stewards?
They try to fix suffering rather than create joy. They try to fix poverty rather than create abundance. They try to fix injustice rather than create fairness for all.
It seems so obvious to me: the more you think about something, the more power you give to it. If thoughts are things, right?
I think about suffering, about hunger, about poverty and I CREATE it in my mind. Once created in my mind, I have given it energy. I have contributed a certain amount of my energy to the concept of suffering. And what happens? The more I think of suffering, the easier it becomes to think of suffering. And the easier it becomes to think of suffering, the more I then think about it.
I then think about the injustice of suffering, the meanness of humanity, the evils of the world, the terrible state of our planet.
And two things happen as a result:
- I have devoted a large amount of my available energy to these things that I do not want to exist, that I think are bad, and in so doing, have ironically actually CONTRIBUTED to their existence!
- I have reduced the amount of personal energy I have available to think about all the good stuff, to create what would be a better alternative.
Of course, it is possible that my way of looking at things isn’t true. But let’s not focus on whether it’s true or not for a second. Ask yourself a better question: Is it helpful? It’s helpful for me to look at examples of people who have created something, and trace their personal history back to see what preceded their creations.
Whenever I do this I see very clearly that they FIRST created their achievement mentally, and only THEN did it come into being. I look at the things I have created in my own life and I see the exact same pattern. I see vision first. Reality second.
Now, if this works for positive achievements, then surely the creation of negative achievements will follow the same physics. It makes no sense to me, for the laws of physics to not be symmetrical.
Hey, maybe it’d be NICE if we only got what we thought about when it was the good stuff. Maybe it would be awesome if the universe kind of just ignored us whenever we were thinking about something negative, maybe it just switched off for a while, you know, gave us a break and all that.
Unlikely. It’s more likely that the laws of physics are intention agnostic.
So, ok, enough talk. What do we DO?
The power we need is in us right now. We don’t need to go anywhere for it. We don’t need to learn anything new, anything neat, any new technique.
Anyone who can read these words can be part of the solution. Anyone who can think, can be part of the solution. Anyone who can think about what they want can be part of the solution.
All we do is simple.
We, individually, and collectively focus on exactly what we want the world to be like, and us, as part of the world, to be like. We focus every spare minute of every spare hour, on what we want to create and NOT on what we don’t want to create.
We focus on creating joy for everyone not ending misery. We focus on creating peace for everyone, not ending fighting. We focus on creating love for everyone, not ending hate. We focus on bringing everyone to the infinite banquet, not on stopping the Barbarians from stuffing themselves. We focus on being the example, not on teaching what not to be. We focus on creating a world where everyone is the example, not on running around like crazy trying to exhort everyone to stewardship. We focus on what we want for ourselves, not on what we don’t want for ourselves. We focus on wanting for EVERYONE what we want for ourselves, not on helping people to reach our lofty level of awareness. We focus on being the example of what it’s like to notice our own scripts, rather than telling people about the script. We focus on demonstrating through action, rather than telling people what to do. We focus on being awesome ourselves, not exhorting people to awesomeness. We focus on visualising what humanity can become, not on fixing what it is now. We focus on bringing a perfect world to completion, not on saving a decaying world from falling into further imperfection. We focus on being a god among gods, rejoicing in the journey, not a lone warrior among a fallen people, desperately battling to save the world. We focus on thinking like a god, not like a human. We focus on being kind to everyone, including the thankless and the evil, not on just being kind to the people we like.
We think of our collective thoughts as the universal sausage machine bringing anything we want for us, for everyone, for the future of humanity.
Be. The. Difference.
