The Learning Sprint

A five-day accelerated-learning cycle — UFAST — for acquiring deep subject knowledge fast, and the principles, techniques and evidence behind why it works.

The Design Sprint solved a hard problem: how do you take a team from a vague idea to a tested prototype in a single week, instead of arguing about it for months? The Learning Sprint takes aim at the equivalent hard problem in education — the hard problem of implementation. We all know that we should learn things deeply. What we lack is a structured, repeatable process that actually gets it done.

The Learning Sprint is that process. It is an intensive, five-day accelerated learning programme for the deep acquisition of subject knowledge — and at its heart sits a five-step cycle we call UFAST.

What it is

A Learning Sprint is a five-day, intensive programme that takes a learner from a standing start to genuine, exam-ready command of a subject. It has been run on demanding academic content — GCSE and A Level Physics among them — precisely because difficult material is the honest test of both the learner and the method.

It is useful for three reasons:

  1. It delivers a significant boost in subject knowledge, and in exam performance, in just five days — covering a syllabus at a depth appropriate for final examination.
  2. It teaches techniques that transfer to the mastery of any subject, not just the one in front of you.
  3. It expands what learners believe they are capable of, by demonstrating their own largely untapped potential when given the right approaches.

The cycle: UFAST

UFAST is the engine. It is a five-step process used as the framework for learning anything new, and it maps cleanly onto the five days of the sprint. The same cycle can be run at any level of a knowledge hierarchy — across a whole subject, a single topic, or one atomic node — and in timeboxes of any length. A week is the canonical Learning Sprint; the cycle also runs as a half-day (six Pomodoros), a single day, a weekend, or stretched into a long-form sprint of a day a week for a month, or ninety minutes a week across a term.

Day 1 — U is for Unpack the Uncertainty

We begin by mapping the unknown. We assess the learner’s starting knowledge, unpack the subject into its topic areas, deconstruct each topic into its components, gather the resources, identify the experts, and chart the learner’s journey through the rest of the week.

Unpacking a node means asking a fixed set of orienting questions: What’s the big idea? Why is it important? What’s our starting point? What new things do we need to introduce and define? What do we need to know, understand and be able to do? How might we be tested on this? What common misconceptions live here, and what are the typical mistakes and pitfalls to look out for?

Day 2 — F is for Figure out the Facts

Day two is the bulk acquisition of facts. We hard-code the most valuable facts into core memory using deep-learning strategies: vocabulary, definitions, terminology, symbols, laws, rules, equations, formulae, history, context and relevance. These are the symbolic frameworks on which everything else is built. Facts are the vocabulary of understanding.

The techniques here are the ones that actually move information into durable memory — the Memory Palace, Spaced Repetition, Active Recall, and the Blank Sheet. The whole day is about recall. By the end of it, learners must be able to reproduce all the core subject information unaided. That solid platform carries the rest of the week.

Day 3 — A is for Assimilate the Analogies

Facts are not understanding. Day three is where the abstractions become intuitions. Using sophisticated analogy-making techniques and team strategies like Jigsaw Learning, we accelerate the assimilation of concepts — answering the alikeness question: so what is it actually like?

The day follows the ADEPT Method, a five-step sequence that builds a mental picture of each concept:

  • Analogy — we tell learners what it’s a bit like, moving them from the known to the unknown.
  • Diagram — we show them a simple picture.
  • Example — we give them a concrete context in which to experience it.
  • Plain English — we describe it in everyday words.
  • Technical Definition — only now do we introduce the formal details.

By the end of the day, learners must be able to summarise each concept on demand, drawing their own diagrams to support the explanation.

Day 4 — S is for Soak up the Strategies

Knowing the facts and grasping the concepts is still not the same as being able to do the questions. Day four is about procedure and practice — the strategies used to solve concepts when they appear in problem form. Using Reverse Learning, Desirable Difficulty, the Feynman Technique and Teachback, we lay bare the procedures, the tips, the tricks, the key insights, and work through fully worked solutions.

The aim is to soak up the best ways to approach exam questions. By the end of the day, learners should be able to answer questions with confidence on every topic in the subject.

Day 5 — T is for Tests for Truth

The final day brings everything together. We teach learners to deliver an exam performance the way an Olympic athlete delivers a race — to prove, under conditions, that they truly know the subject. This is a rapid talk-through of as many past-paper questions as possible, the moment of truth: can they actually answer the questions?

How we know it works

The evidence is built into the structure of the week. We open the sprint with a pre-test and close it with a post-test, set at exactly the same level. The improvement in subject performance is shown plainly in the gap between the two scores. No anecdote, no hand-waving — the difference between the first test and the last is the measure of the process.

Why it works

Underneath the five visible steps runs a deeper rationale. The Learning Sprint isn’t a bag of tricks; it is built on a small set of principles about how learning actually accelerates.

The first is marginal gains — the idea that you make rapid progress not by getting dramatically better at one thing, but by getting a little better at many things, and letting the improvements compound. The second is one thing at a time — focused, single-tasked attention rather than scattered effort. The sprint structure enforces both: deep work, in timeboxes, on one component at a time.

At a meta-level, the methodology deliberately incorporates the five processes implicit in the neuropsychology of learning:

  • Discernment — the ability to notice what you’re doing and how well it’s working.
  • Attunement — the ability to tune in to the approaches moving you most quickly toward improved performance.
  • Coherence — the moment in which it all starts to come together.
  • Insight — noticing how and why the process is working.
  • Embodiment — living the process, and teaching it by example.

These are not bolted-on extras. They are what the five days are quietly training, alongside the subject itself — so that the learner walks away not only knowing more Physics, but knowing how to learn.

Beyond academic subjects: the Language Sprint

Because UFAST is content-agnostic, the same cycle adapts to domains far from the exam hall. The clearest example is the Language Sprint: the Learning Sprint methodology applied to learning a language from scratch in five days.

We don’t pretend you reach native-speaker level in a week. The target is what we call operational fluency — the ability to get into real conversations with native speakers. That matters because once you can converse, you have broken the back of the language; from there it can only get better.

The engine of the Language Sprint is the language dialogue: an interactive challenge with a native speaker, in person or through pre-recorded audio or video. Each dialogue runs twenty-five minutes, and we do twenty-five of them across the week — five a day. Alongside this we commit to learning seven hundred and fifty words in the target language (a hundred and fifty a day), and we run two twenty-five-minute forced-production sessions each day, in which absolutely no non-target language is permitted.

Same cycle, different content. That is the point. The Learning Sprint is not a course about Physics or French — it is a portable answer to the hard problem of implementation, a structure you can pick up and apply to anything you decide is worth learning fast and learning well.
